Things Seen and Heard

6/21/2022 (Permalink)

A small boy holding a book with his mouth open. Actual photo of me at the sword warehouse.

One of the best things about working in commercial water damage restoration is seeing things you would typically never see. For instance, I once got to walk a job wherein a storage warehouse had flooded. Guess what the warehouse stocked?
Swords and knives, as well as other combat weapons both for display and for actual use. Pretty cool, huh?

I've also walked jobs in gigantic distribution centers. While this doesn't sound all that interesting, seeing the processes of how goods are received, packaged, and shipped all across the globe is exceedingly interesting, at least to me. I have been accused of being a boring person at times, but I'm telling you: if you haven't seen hundreds of conveyer belts or rollers at work simultaneously, you're missing out!

Now obviously, we never want to have to meet any of these business owners. Usually, that would require something bad happening. However, if you do experience a loss in your business and have to give SERVPRO of Hacienda Heights / Rowland Heights a call, we are happy to come out. With over a decade of experience in fire, water, and mold loss restoration, we are the best choice when it comes to getting your business back on track. I look forward to seeing you!

The Mold Trauma

6/21/2022 (Permalink)

Mold on a wall in a commercial space It grows anywhere it can.

Mold is something nobody wants but everyone has. Let me qualify that statement a bit more. No matter how new or old, small or big, clean or dirty a commercial building is, there are mold spores present. They are a naturally occurring part of the environment and no matter what you may hear on certain restoration or abatement ads, you can never fully remove mold from a space. What you can do, when and if the need arises, is remediate (reduce back to optimum levels) the mold.

A warehouse is an ideal place for black mold to grow. The conditions are often perfect for it: warm, damp, and dark. If moisture finds its way into a place that is out of sight and has the opportunity to do so, it could potentially be the perfect setting for mold to grow unchecked. This is where SERVPRO of Hacienda Heights / Rowland Heights comes into the picture.

With more than ten years of mold remediation experience, our team is the go-to source when black mold pops up in your commercial property. We use multiple products on mold to get it back in check, one of which being our proprietary cleaning agent SERVPROxide. This is a patented solution that SERVPRO uses in multiple types of situations.

Has your office space or warehouse been affected by mold? If so, give us a call today.

Now for Our Commercial Break

An up-shot of a glass building That's a lot of space for disaster to strike.

SERVPRO of Hacienda Heights / Rowland Heights gets a lot of phone calls involving commercial buildings. This should come as no surprise, given the fact that our surrounding area is predominantly commercial. Manufacturing, warehouse storage spaces, and distribution centers (not to mention all of the gas stations, restaurants, and retail stores) make up much of the city.

With that being stated, it should come as no surprise that we are very experienced in resolving these types of losses in short order. That is one of the reasons we are a popular choice for many business owners in the local area when disaster strikes and production comes to a screeching halt.

Warehouse flood? We have a few under our belt. Restaurant fire? Been there, done that. Interdimensional aliens infesting a shoe store with black mold? Okay, no, not yet at least. The point remains, though: if your business is affected by any type of loss, vandalism, or biohazard, there really is only one service provider to call to get things back in order: SERVPRO of Hacienda Heights / Rowland Heights. With over a decade of experience and a team full of experienced professionals at our disposal, we will make sure things are returned to preloss condition.

A Fun Trip Down Memory Lane

6/17/2022 (Permalink)

A COVID-19 virus example Here's a fun photo I bet you were dying to see again.

COVID-19 (SARS-COV-2) is still fresh on everyone's mind. Never in any of our lifetimes has a disease had such an impact on the world. Not that any of you want to but for the purpose of this blog, I would like to take you back in time to 2020. I know, that particular year is one you would love to forget, but it is important to note that SERVPRO of Hacienda Heights / Rowland Heights as well as numerous other franchises were put to the test and rose to the occasion time and time again.

In March of 2020, the CDC declared the recent COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic. Many things happened very quickly at that point, including a plan to shelter in place in order to flatten the curve of infection in hopes of slowing the spread of the virus. While many were able to do so, some business remained open and operating as normal. These businesses were at the time considered "essential" by certain government entities.

SERVPRO was among a handful of companies that would receive daily and weekly updates from the CDC in regard to battling the virus by cleaning and sanitizing businesses and homes. Early on, they learned that certain cleaning products were very effective against the COVID virus. One of the products in our line, SERVPROxide, was confirmed as being effective. We would regularly get calls to businesses, even going so far as to launch a preemptive cleaning program called "Certified SERVPRO Clean", which entailed regular cleanings on a recurring basis.

Fast forward back to today: SERVPRO of Hacienda Heights / Rowland Heights still gets biohazard calls from businesses, though less of them involve COVID-19 these days. However, this event was a perfect way to illustrate how SERVPRO truly is a world-class brand that can back up our reputation as being amongst the best in class in the restoration business.

An Involuntary Day Off

6/17/2022 (Permalink)

A blonde smiling woman lays in a hammock Not so fast, Sharon. We've got some mopping to do.

Sometimes, you just need a day off. Whether you work a 9 - 5 job in an office, are a cross-country truck driver, or pull loads in a warehouse, sometimes the body and mind need rest and recovery to operate to their highest potential.
Saying that, nobody wants a forced day off, like what you would get in the event of a flood or a fire at your place of work. Unfortunately, this happens fairly frequently and is very seldom expected. SERVPRO of Hacienda Heights / Rowland Heights knows all too well that time lost is money lost when it comes to production and work.

In our local service area, we have quite a few businesses. These range from warehouses, retail stores, distribution centers, restaurants, and numerous others. When we get a call to one of these businesses, we know that time and speed are of the utmost importance. However, we never lower our standards or try any less than we would on a job where the deadlines are a bit more relaxed. Rather than settle, we raise our bar and push harder.

Yes, days off are important. Yes, downtime is crucial. No, SERVPRO of Hacienda Heights / Rowland Heights doesn't take days off because we know that your business is your livlihood.

Black Water in Commercial Buildings

6/18/2021 (Permalink)

Commercial warehouse after a flood caused by upstairs bathroom leak Call us today for any water loss to your commercial building (626) 964-7700

Your commercial building can be affected by flooding from several sources. Water damage can include warped flooring and moldy drywall, but one immediate issue caused by flooding is the influx of contaminated water. If your business has recently been damaged by flooding, we can help you understand how this type of water can cause long-term damage and what you can do to mitigate it.

1. It Can Contain Dangerous Chemicals

Environmental experts often call contaminated water that stems from flooding Category 3 or "blackwater." This means the water did not come from a sterile source and may contain various hazardous components, including harsh sewer and lawn chemicals that entered the water during flooding. These chemicals can make the water dangerous to touch, so calling in flood damage and cleanup service is the safest way to remove it.

2. It May Make You Sick

Category 3 water damage can be dangerous in more than one way. For example, standing black water can grow microbes that may cause a variety of illnesses. Urine and feces may also be present, even if they're not immediately visible. It's wise to avoid this type of water entirely and wait for professional cleanup services to arrive.

3. Acting Quickly Can Be Essential

Because contaminated water can become more dangerous the longer it sits, it is good to call in a cleanup crew right away. This can be important even if you believe the worst of the damage has already been done. Having the water removed may reduce the chances of long-term issues with your building's affected floors and walls and prevent mold growth, which can be challenging to treat once it takes hold.

Blackwater damage can harm your commercial building in several ways. However, when you know its dangers and how to combat them, you may be able to prevent the worst of the destruction.

If your commercial building has an unexpected water emergency call SERVPRO of Hacienda Heights/Rowland Heights today (626) 964-7700

Causes of Water Damage

6/14/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO green logo with 24/7/365 on it Here to Help!

If your home or business experiences water damage, it can cause a number of problems. These problems can be minor or severe, depending on how long it goes untreated. While water damage is a serious issue, not many people realize how many things can cause it. Flooding feels like an obvious answer, but other factors that exist inside your home or business can also cause this problem. Keep in mind, that water damage is preventable most of the time. Knowing what causes it can help you to be proactive.

Storm

Weather is a big cause of water damage. Many people think this means rain, but snow can be just as disastrous. A big snow storm devastation may harm your walls, ceilings, and roof. Ice dams can also be a problem. They form on your roof because of poor attic insulation, and can cause water to build on your roof. This water build up will likely leak into your home, causing damage to your roof and ceilings. To prevent this, make sure your attic is properly insulated. You should also have your roof inspected every year to make sure it is not damaged in any way.

Plumbing

Plumbing issues are one of the top causes of water damage. It may actually be the number one cause. Plumbing pipes may have long-life spans, but they can still crack, leak, and burst. This is why you should have them inspected at least once a year. A number of things could lead to early deterioration. There are signs of pipes leaking to look out for. For one, if your water bill is starting to cost more for no apparent reason. A leaky pipe will raise your water bill. You can install a sensor for your pipes. It will alert you to any leaks and in doing so, help prevent future water damage.

Washing Machine

A washing machine is a pretty essential household appliance, but many people don’t think about it until laundry time. However, a malfunctioning washing machine can cause some serious issues. If the supply hose leaks at all, around six hundred gallons of water could spill out within an hour. A leak like this could come from a bad connection to the machine, or damaged house. This type of flooding could cause extensive water damage. The damage will be even worse if your washing machine is on the top floor. It is important to replace your supply hose at least once every five years. In addition, overloading your machine can lead to problems with the hose. Those problems could eventually cause a leak.

While knowing the top causes of water damage can help you be proactive, it won’t always work. Freak accidents can happen and leave your home in pretty bad shape. However, in the case of water damage, SERVPRO of Walnut, Hacienda Heights/Rowland Heights is there to help. They have trained technicians ready to completely dry out your house or business, and one of the fastest response times in the industry. SERVPRO of Walnut, Hacienda Heights/Rowland Heights is there to do the job right.

10 Critical Steps to Recovering your Business after a Fire

6/1/2021 (Permalink)

Commercial Building- hallway with soot and smoke damage from fire Vacant Commercial Unit caught fire due to vandalism and suffered significant damage from smoke and soot.

When you’re recovering from a commercial fire, you need to take control. These 10 steps can help you develop a business fire recovery plan. Knowing what to do before something happens makes it easier to deal with the worst.

1. CALL THE INSURANCE COMPANY

Notify your insurance company immediately. Be ready for that first call with as much information as possible. Cover these important points too.

• Your insurer’s requirements for damage documentation
• Scheduling an adjuster to inspect the property
• Deadlines for proof of loss statements
• Possibility of written extensions and approvals
• Recommendations for a
 Restoration Vendor

2. DISCONNECT ALL UTILITIES

A commercial fire affects utilities lines, wiring and plumbing. Turn off the gas, electricity and water coming into your building. If you have any doubts about safely shutting everything down, contact city services right away.

3. ASSESS STRUCTURAL SAFETY

Fire-fighting efforts soak walls, floors and ceilings creating a dangerous environment. The intense heat of a commercial property fire damages a site’s roof, exterior walls and foundation. Bring in a certified fire damage professional to assess your building’s structural safety inside and out.

4. SECURE THE PROPERTY

Even a small fire at your business leaves the property vulnerable to intruders. Broken windows and doors provide easy entry for vandals. SERVPRO can secure the property by boarding up fire-damaged windows and doors.

5. START THE RECOVERY PROCESS

Once the site is secure, restoration crews can start the cleanup and recovery process. Their initial work addresses potential hazards like damaged wiring and ruptured pipes. They also take care of unstable interior and exterior materials including drywall, ceilings, subflooring and window and door frames.

6. BEGIN ASSESSING YOUR LOSSES

Get the OK from on-site teams before beginning a room-by-room loss assessment. When you’re sure of your personal safety, inspect the entire building. Make note of all fire-damaged equipment, furnishings and inventory.

7. DON’T THROW AWAY ANYTHING

Don’t throw away fire-damaged business equipment. Don’t haul off water-damaged furniture or ruined inventory. Leave everything in place so that your adjuster can see the full extent of your post-fire losses.

8. DON’T ASSUME IT’S ALL A LOSS

Experienced restoration professionals can often save business-related items after a fire. Special techniques can salvage everything from electronics to paper records.

• Customer and vendor records
• Employee payroll records
• Accounting ledgers and checkbooks
• Tax-related paperwork
• Business licenses and permits

9. DOCUMENT AND RECORD EVERYTHING

Your final damage inventory should include lists, photos and videos.

10. BE PATIENT AND COMMUNICATE

The aftermath of a business fire leaves you focused on recovery. Be patient with the process. Stay in close touch with people involved in your business. Restoration might take some time, so let everyone know what to expect.

Is Vandalism affecting your Business?

6/1/2020 (Permalink)

Vandalism Vandalism in LA, business are being boarded up.

In the light of a chilly spring morning, you pull up to begin your work day and see the evidence of what happened the night before: the side of your office has been brightly tagged in paint.

Thankfully, this doesn’t have to be the story of your place of work. You and your team can take steps to deter and hopefully prevent vandalism.

Steps to Take before Vandalism Strikes

To begin, make sure to keep the area around your business well-kept and clean. Well-manicured landscaping and a regularly maintained building can help deter vandalism. You can even use your landscaping to help protect otherwise easy-to-reach marks. Large bushes or plants that are prickly can be placed under and in front of windows and walls that could be targeted.

You can also increase the security around your place of business. Secure gates and entrances to make it harder to enter the premises and keep the area well-lit. You can also add motion-sensor lights or security systems. Security camera systems now a days, are extremely inexpensive and easy to install and manage via your cellphone from anywhere.

If you are the victim of vandalism, make sure to clean up the damage as soon as possible to discourage additional vandalism.

What to Do If You Find Vandalism on Your Property

Steps to clean up vandalism vary greatly depending on the kind. The simplest to clean are cases involving eggs and toilet paper. To clean egg, you will want to act as quickly as possible. Use a garden hose or a combination of soapy water to clean egg off the side of a building or a car. Avoid using a power washer as this can remove paint and damage siding. Toilet paper can persist if you try to pull it down. Instead, use a leaf blower or a long implement like a pool net to gently lift the toilet paper off tree branches and buildings.

Other cases, not as easily remedied, can involve paint or broken windows. If there is broken glass, be very careful to pick up all large pieces and vacuum up any smaller pieces left behind. If there is paint, be very careful with any home remedies as many paint removing products can also harm the materials under the paint, like siding and masonry. If you have any questions about graffiti removal or vandalism cleanup, give our office a call 626-964-7700 and ask us how we can help.

Be Winter Ready For Your Home or Business

5/31/2018 (Permalink)

Cold weather can have a huge impact on your home or business, if you are not properly prepared. Whether it is heavy rain, freezing temperatures, damaging winds, sleet or snow, all can cause serious and costly property damage. While you cannot control the weather, you can take the sting out of winter weather.

To help prevent costly damages due to weather, consider taking the following precautions to protect your property before colder weather hits.

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice and snow, can cause branches to fall. This could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Roofs, water pipes and gutters should all be inspected to ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should direct away from your building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during the fall. Leaves and other obstructions can lead to a destructive effect, that can lead to roof damage and interior water problems.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open allowing warm inside air to circulate around the pipes. If the building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting water off at the main valve in the basement or crawlspace. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe.
